The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is the official name of this sprawling country that consists of over 3,000 islands, cays and islets with a collective population of approximately 354,000.
Of course, not all the islands are populated, but there are a sufficient number of them with permanent residents to provide those seeking a Caribbean wedding with a wide range of choices of where to wed and where to honeymoon. The options for Caribbean wedding venues are almost endless.
There's the hustle and bustle of Nassau, the capital of the country, which boasts mega resorts, an almost unlimited number of bars and restaurants, and just about every activity a couple and their guests would want to do surrounding a destination wedding or Caribbean honeymoon.
For those seeking a little less congestion, there is Grand Bahama Island. It is a large island approximately 87 miles in length and an average of 6 miles wide, but the center of activity and of tourism in general is Freeport and the Lucaya area. The balance of the island features small "settlements", the National Park with beautiful beaches and underground rivers, and warm friendly people. Grand Lucayan is a great place for a Caribbean wedding or if you prefer something more intimate for your Bahamas wedding consider Old Bahama Bay on the West End.
If you are really looking for a laid back experience, then the Out Islands are for you. These include the Abacos, Andros, Eleuthera, Harbour Island, Bimini and The Exumas, among many others. You won't find mega resorts but you will discover boutique properties that cater to all your needs. Some are rustic, others elegant. But in all cases you will find people working to make you comfortable and happy with your choice of island.
Few countries can offer you such a wide variety of destinations all within the one country. Each island is distinctive and offers its own brand of hotels and resorts. The common thread is that they all enjoy the beautifully clear waters of The Bahamas which the astronauts have commented are the prettiest in the world.
